Tompkins Square First Run is one of the best and biggest dog runs in the city. Over a decade ago, the dog owners of the East Village struck a deal with the Parks Department to start the dog run in exchange for staying off the lawns and keeping our area safe and clean. We were the first official dog run in New York City, hence the name.

In the summer of 2002, we set off a separate area so that small dogs could be more safe and comfortable. The small dog area is only for small dogs under 23 pounds.

We have two online message boards, one each for the big and small areas of the run. You can join either (or both!) to keep abreast of what people are talking about at the run:
